Setting Up the iDev Affiliate Database

iDev Tutorials Chapter 5

The difficulty level for the iDev Affiliate install has just jumped up two or three notches. This is where you might start to feel beads of sweat form on your brow if you’re new to “website stuff”.

As they say in Jamaica, “No worries, mon”.

After all, that’s why I put together these tutorials, right?

Now, I will tell you from having worked on a LOT of different types of servers through the years that you can make your job of creating a database MUCH easier if you choose the right web host. So see the resources section if you’re still searching around or you aren’t married to your current one.

Three Steps to Setting Up the iDev Affiliate Database

You’ll see all of this in the video, but there are three steps to setting up a database for a script, or software on your web server. The step that everyone tends to forget is the last one.

  1. Create the database
  2. Create a user (username and password)
  3. Assign the user to the database

I’m not covering these in detail here because… well because I recorded the video for you.

But it’s that third one that gets people yelling at their computer screen. So now that I’ve warned you - you’re not going to be the one going postal, right?

The logic behind that third step is that it’s very common to have several databases and several usernames. Typically you’ll have a different database for each “script” you have installed. So if you have a blog, a forum, and iDev Affiliate installed you’ll probably have three databases.

Well, you need to tell your server (computer) which users should be allowed access to which databases.

There’s another reason for that third step.

Geeks have a nack for making even simple processes more complex.
